Lowell Mayor Taking 10-Day Trip To Cambodia
Lowell Mayor Rodney Elliott is leaving for a 10-day trip to Cambodia this afternoon in honor of the 40-year anniversary of the Cambodian genocide, during which up to three million people were killed.
Cambodians make up a third of Lowell's population, and Elliott has said he expects that figure to grow.
"I think it is important for the city that we bring back a better understanding of the lives that first generation Cambodians came from and how we can become a better city with that understanding," he said.
Elliott, who is paying for the trip himself, says he will visit hospitals, schools and non-profits. He will also meet with state dignitaries.
