Forecast: Heat Persists, But Today Is Breezy

Sunday marked the 40th anniversary of the hottest day ever recorded in New England. That day, Boston reached 102 degrees and most climate stations from Nantucket to Portland, Maine hit 100 or greater.

August can still bring lots of hot weather right through the end of the month, and although we’ve only recorded five days of 90-degree weather in Boston, I suspect there's more heat to come.

Today might be one of those 90-degree days again, and we have some humidity to go along with the heat.

As you start your day, readings will quickly rise through the 70s and Boston and surrounding communities should be well into the 80s before lunch. Unlike the past few times it’s been this hot, we will have a nice breeze to mix up the air. Wind definitely helps take the edge off the heat.

A cold front will put an end to any 90-degree weather for the foreseeable future tonight. This frontal system is strong enough to produce a line of showers and thunderstorms, but the timing of the front is such severe weather isn’t as likely. However, there are some indications the air may become more favorable for storminess during the overnight. The bottom line is you could be awakened tonight or early Tuesday morning as the frontal system slowly pushes through.

The front remains a bit close to the area on Tuesday, and clearing will be slow in the morning. There could be a lingering shower as well. It turns very warm in the afternoon with highs well into the 80s, but no 90s are expected.

Wednesday is my pick of the week with abundant sunshine and pleasantly warm readings. The second part of the work week brings some forecasting challenges. The models are conflicted about an area of rain sometime in the Friday or Saturday time period. I’ll have a better idea Tuesday and Wednesday if rain is indeed a likelihood late this week.

Today: Sunny, but clouds moving in for the afternoon. Becoming more humid late and breezy. Highs 85-90.

Tonight: Clouds and a few showers or storms late at night or toward morning. Lows in the 60s to near 70.

Tuesday: Any showers end, then clearings. Lots of afternoon sunshine. Highs 84-88.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 80.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high in the upper 70s.

Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61.

Friday: Partly sunny, may shower, with a high 77-81.
