Man Charged With Prompting Bomb Scare In Boston Pleads Not Guilty

A man charged with prompting a bomb scare in Boston when he left a suitcase near a Department of Homeland Security vehicle has been held on $50,000 bail.

James Derepentigny, of Lawrence, pleaded not guilty Monday in Boston Municipal Court to planting a hoax device.

The abandoned floral print suitcase was found Friday during a routine patrol near the Coast Guard office on Atlantic Avenue. Police Commissioner William Evans said Derepentigny placed it next to the vehicle and quickly walked away. He was caught on surveillance video.

Police destroyed the suitcase in a controlled detonation that sent a boom through a busy part of the city. No explosives were found.

Derepentigny's court-appointed attorney pointed out that the suitcase did not contain explosives and asked for lower bail.
