Highway Inspection Complete After Fatal Manhole Cover Accident

State officials have completed an inspection of Boston area highways a day after a manhole cover apparently flew loose, striking and killing a motorist.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said the inspection ended Saturday morning. It had begun Friday afternoon and continued overnight.

Officials say the inspection found nothing to indicate a threat to public safety.

The inspection involved four to seven crews at a time working on travel lanes of Interstate 93 from Somerville to Boston.

Crews inspected 919 metal covers, sewage grates and electrical panel covers. They performed cautionary maintenance on 65 of them.

Glover Elementary School art teacher Caitlin Clavette was on her way to work in Milton on Friday morning when she was killed.

Authorities continue to investigate what caused the manhole cover to come loose.
