Forecast: Any Snow This Weekend Will Be Light And Mostly Near The Cape

No matter how you define spring — whether that's meteorologically or astronomically — the weather as of late hasn't really felt very springlike.

If you are in search of milder temperatures, there is some hint of good news for a couple of days next week, but in general, I don't expect the pattern to really undergo a major change until April.

Today will be featuring a lot of sunshine, but winter cold. Highs in the 30s is more typical of January — not mid-March. The difference is the sun is quite strong and even on these cold days, there is melting in the sunshine.

You might have heard about a possible storm for the weekend. The scenario is this: a low pressure system making its way down from Canada will head to the coastline over the weekend. As the low gets its feet wet in the Atlantic it will gain some energy and become a stronger ocean storm.

If you were hoping for another snowstorm, you'd want this low pressure area to take a track close to Nantucket. However, the low is going to remain much further east, and therefore, the heaviest precipitation will fall over the fish, not over land.

Even with this track there is still the chance for some snow. The best opportunity for snow will be over the southern part of Cape Cod and the Islands. It's possible there will be a coating up to 3 inches of snow. To the north of this area little or no accumulation will occur, based on the present track of the storm anyway.

Of course, things can change, so stay tuned to my latest forecast for updates. More seasonable weather arrives at the start of next week, but colder air returns by Wednesday with highs again 10 or more degrees below average.
