Forecast: Perhaps Record Cold Today

Today is going to be one nasty early June day and that's all there is to it.

The coldest June 6 along the coast on record took place in 1926, when Providence and Boston reached only 52 degrees. Today will rival that chill. In Worcester the record for the coldest June 6 is back in 2000, when it reached 51; the city too will be close to a record.

You can blame the chilly Atlantic and a wind off the water all day today. This cool marine air will remain in place through tomorrow, although Wednesday's highs will get closer to the 60-degree mark.

There is also going to be some wind today. Those winds will reach levels strong enough to be noticed and perhaps take down a few tree limbs. This can always lead to limited power outages.

Rainfall won't be heavy in totals, but there could be some downpours. When all is said and done, another quarter to half inch of rain is possible.

The wet roads are likely to slow down the commute a bit this morning and again this afternoon. Overnight showers will tend to diminish, and by Wednesday morning there's just a small risk of a shower.

The clouds will be tough to erode tomorrow. I'm going to play down clearing and if you see the sun, consider it a bonus.

Presently the time period from Thursday through the weekend looks really quite nice with moderating temperatures and more and more sunshine. A weak cold front may bring a brief and isolated shower, mainly west of Route 495, Saturday, but that looks like the only chance of rain.

One thing to note: There will be a big ocean storm passing by Friday. If this storm decided to take a track closer to the coast it could influence our weather more. I don't think this happens, but I will definitely be watching model trends over the next several days.
