Lawrence Mayor Says He's Considering Suing Sessions For Libel Over Sanctuary City Comments

Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera says he might sue U.S Attorney General Jeff Sessions for libel, after Sessions suggested the city was a sanctuary for immigrant fentanyl dealers.

Sessions made the comments in New Hampshire Thursday, where he announced more federal prosecution of fentanyl dealers.

During his speech, Sessions said that prosecutors recently brought charges against "four illegal aliens residing in the sanctuary city of Lawrence, Massachusetts."

"There can be no sanctuary for drug dealers and fentanyl dealers in this country in my opinion," Sessions said.

Rivera says Sessions knows Lawrence doesn't harbor criminals.

“I will be consulting legal counsel on suing Attorney General Sessions for libel," Rivera said. "He knows good and well that Lawrence has not, and will not, harbor criminals. We do not harbor criminals period, regardless of whether they are documented or undocumented."
