Those Signs On The Highway Aren't About Impending Doom, Just Comm. Ave. Construction

If you live, or work, or drive almost anywhere in eastern Massachusetts, you may have noticed that digital signs hanging over area highways are warning you about something.

"It's coming, it's bad" is not referring to the Apocalypse, but to upcoming construction on Commonwealth Avenue by the BU Bridge.

In short, the construction — which starts Thursday night — will last about two-and-a-half weeks, will close down traffic to cars on that segment of Comm. Ave., and will also close lanes on the Mass. Pike on both sides.

The state has set up suggested detour routes and also advises you to work from home, walk or ride your bike to work instead of driving.

Patrick Marvin, a spokesman for MassDOT, said the digital signs have been posted on highways all over the Boston area.

"These messages have been posted in order to increase awareness of the upcoming construction work, and we appreciate members of the public discussing the major transportation impacts and the need to seek alternate routes and adjust travel plans," he said Wednesday.

The signs are developed internally by MassDOT staff members, said Marvin.

And while the signs may have made you chuckle (or shudder), the agency definitely missed out on this opportunity:
