Authorities are investigating the death of a 39-year-old man who was in the custody of Boston police.

Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins' office said in a statement that the man was alone in a holding cell in the South End station when he was found unresponsive at about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The state medical examiner's office has conducted an autopsy, but the cause of death is pending results of toxicology results. No name was released.

Boston police Sgt. John Boyle says the man was taken into custody on a fugitive from justice warrant issued by New Hampshire authorities. He did not know why he was wanted. The man told police he was homeless.
