Today's Weather: Cool Today, But Milder Late Week

The weekend brought a taste of fall, with temperatures remaining in the 60s along the coastline and barely getting into the 70s for inland areas. This coolness is definitely early, and temperatures have been below average for a few days.

This will help to lower the ranking of this particular August, which, before the cool weather moved in, was standing at the third hottest on record. But I suspect with a couple more days of temperatures in the 70s, we will fall out of the top 10.

What about rainfall? There was a good rainstorm at the beginning of the month but since then, it's been very dry, with Greater Boston having very little rain over the past two weeks.

Today, we will find an easterly wind continuing and with water temperatures in the Gulf of Maine continuing to slowly fall, air temperatures will struggle into the lower 70s. Any cloudiness this morning will begin to break up, although it's hard to know exactly how much sunshine coastal areas will see this afternoon. I do think all of us will see brighter conditions, but these patterns can keep clouds remaining a little bit longer than expected right at the shore.

A weak frontal system will pass near the area Wednesday night and Thursday and may bring a few showers, but there's also a chance we miss all the rain. At the same time, a coastal tropical system will be passing well offshore. I don't think that the system does anything more than create some high surf; however, I will be monitoring it closely for any changes.
