Today's Weather: Quite Warm For The First Day Of Fall

Temperatures reached close to 90 degrees at Logan Airport on Sunday, one of the warmest days recorded on that date since 1980, when it hit 90 degrees. Things will continue to be on the toasty side today and with the humidity, it will feel quite uncomfortable for students in the classroom.

I was doing a little data digging last night and discovered that of the warmest 18 Septembers, 10 of those have occurred since 2002 — just another measure of our warming climate.

There is a cold front approaching the region from the west that will kick off a few showers overnight. It's been very dry as I've been writing for the past few weeks and if you're trying to get some things planted, it's been quite difficult without augmenting the water.

I don't see much in the way of rainfall tonight, although anything will help at this point. Temperatures will be cooler the rest of the week, but they are still going to be averaging above normal. Typically, we would see most days in the upper 60s to lower 70s this time of the year, but we will be well into the 70s several days this week. I actually think things will start to heat up again in the closing days of this month.

Although we are nearing the end of the growing season, the lack of rain can be problematic if it continues deep into the fall. Damage can occur to evergreens if the ground is quite dry before it freezes — something to keep in mind as we get deeper into next month.
