Twenty Boston University students face disciplinary hearings that could result in suspensions after university police allegedly caught them at an outdoor, on-campus party violating COVID-19 guidelines.

The university-run outlet BU Today reported Monday that more than 25 people were observed — some of whom fled when police arrived — just before 1 a.m. Sunday with beer cans near West Campus dormitories and Nickerson Field.

Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore told the outlet that many of the students were in close proximity not wearing masks, while police said the 20 students who remained on scene were all underage.

Disciplinary hearings started Tuesday, and Elmore told BU Today that consequences on the table include a suspension for the semester with no tuition or room and board refund — a step that Northeastern University took earlier this year.

Any students suspended would be forbidden from completing classes, even remotely. If any students are suspended, they would be the first barred from BU based on the school's COVID-19 guidelines, according to BU Today.
