Authorities Say 1 Worker Dead, Another Injured In Stairwell Collapse At Cambridge Parking Garage

One construction worker was killed and another was injured Wednesday when an interior stairwell at a Cambridge parking garage collapsed, authorities, said.

One of the workers was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other worker was taken to a hospital with significant chest and arm injuries, Cambridge Fire Department Chief Gerry Mahoney said.

No names were released.

The fire department reported that it responded to the scene at about 8:30 a.m. for a "structure building collapse."

"Units have responded to a parking garage at Second Street and Spring Street after one of the stairwells collapsed, resulting in significant injuries to two on-site workers conducting restoration work," city police tweeted.

The cause is under investigation.

The Cambridge accident comes a week after two construction workers were killed when they were struck by a truck in Boston.

This is a developing story. We will continue to update as information becomes available.
