A mosquito sample collected in Cambridge tested positive for West Nile virus, according to public health officials.
The virus typically causes mild symptoms, but older people and those with weak immune systems can become seriously sick.
West Nile was also found in mosquitoes in seven other local communities, including Boston, Medford and Quincy.
So far, there have been no human cases of the virus this summer.
