A man was shot and killed by police in Dorchester early Saturday morning after the man stabbed an officer who was responding to an emergency call, according to the Boston Police Department.

The officer, who was responding to reports of someone screaming in the area of 22 Glendale Street around 2:45 a.m., was stabbed in the upper torso, police said. The suspect, who authorities say was 48, was shot and killed by another officer.

The suspect was pronounced dead on scene.

Both officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer who was stabbed suffered serious but non-life-threatening wounds, according to the Suffolk District Attorney's office.

"This is just another reminder of the dangers officers face every day and how quickly events can unfold when officers respond to a call,"  said Boston Police Superintendent Gregory Long.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was briefed on the incident and wished the injured officers a quick recovery.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden arrived on the scene following the incident.

"We have taken the lead in this matter," said Hayden. "We will conduct an active and thorough investigation."

Police have not released the name of the man who was killed.
