Mass. man wanted in connection with girlfriend's death shot and killed by Vermont police

Vermont State Police say officers killed a Fitchburg man wanted for questioning in connection to the death of a 23-year-old woman from Harvard, Mass.

Officers shot and killed Matthew Davis, 34, Tuesday evening after he was spotted walking in Brattleboro, Vermont. According to police, Davis had a knife on him when two state troopers and two Brattleboro officers approached him. He was shot in a nearby wooded area.

"Police rendered first aid to Davis following the shooting and called for EMS personnel to respond, but he was pronounced dead on the scene," police said in a statement. "The knife was located near Davis’s body. No other injuries were reported."

State police did not disclose which officers shot and killed Davis, but "in accordance with regular procedures," their names will be released Wednesday.

Davis was wanted for questioning in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Mary Anderson, who was found dead in her pickup truck in Brattleboro. She had been reporting missing over the weekend, and was last seen in Hudson, New Hampshire, Saturday evening.

Anderson's body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Burlington, and an autopsy is expected to be completed Wednesday.
