5 things to do this weekend, including a staging of 'Chicken & Biscuits' and a performance from the Miguel Zenon Quartet

This week, I finally got around to watching “Tár.” The film follows a famous conductor's fall from grace and it seems like it will be one of the biggest dramas of the year. I loved it and realized how little I know about the classical music world. Catching an orchestra performance this winter is now on my to-do list. If you have similar priorities, the self-conducted orchestra A Far Cry will perform a concert examining intimacy through a wide range of music this weekend. A local production of the Broadway comedy “Chicken and Biscuits” will begin its run and acclaimed jazz musician Miguel Zenon will perform. There are tons of things to do this weekend. Check out all of our recommendations below.

'Chicken & Biscuits'

Friday, Dec. 9-Sunday, Jan. 8

The family comedy by Douglas Lyons had its Broadway debut last year, and now, local audiences can see a production of the play in Boston. It’s a fast-moving comedy that follows the Jenkins family as they prepare for the funeral of their father. The play is about religion, generational change and love. This regional premiere of the play —the first self-produced performance from Front Porch Arts Collective—will reflect on what makes the experience of being Black in New England unique. The show will be staged at Suffolk University's Modern Theatre.

Miguel Zenón Quartet

Saturday, Dec. 10

Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón will perform jazz at the Groton Hill Music Center. Zenón is highly celebrated, and for good reason. When he began performing, his work was groundbreaking, mixing Latin American folkloric music and Jazz. There’s something special about watching a jazz performance on a cold winter night. As Zenón’s show is one night only, it’s definitely one to catch.

A Far Cry's 'Dear Friend'

Saturday, Dec. 10

As the title suggests, this musical performance celebrates music composed for friends, family and colleagues. The concert by A Far Cry will explore the works that composers like Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, Kaija Saariaho and others wrote for intimate audiences. “Dear Friend” draws on a wide variety of chamber music to uncover connections between composers across different generations. If you miss this performance at St. John’s Church in Jamaica Plain, the group will also perform at Longy School of Music of Bard College's Pickman Hall in Cambridge on Sunday, Dec. 11.

The Hinterlands Ball

Saturday, Dec. 10

Trendcasters have been saying that the “Tumblr era” is coming back for a while now. It’s one that I know well—the world of circle skirts, soft grunge and indie rock ruled my teenage years. This weekend, Sinnet and ONCE are bringing that world back to life with a night of indie rock for The Hinterlands Ball at the Center for Arts at the Armory in Somerville. Light of Day Records will be selling vinyl and indie-alt rock band Paper Tigers will perform alongside Sinnet and Me in Capris. You can dress up or down and tickets are only $18.

'Catch and Release'

Sunday, Dec. 11

In collaboration with Nedret Andre's contemporary art exhibition, Beacon Gallery will host a live performance and improv with Shelly B. Phillips following artist Nedret Andre's talk and gallery tour. The exhibition, titled “The Air We Breathe,” focuses on the delicate systems and importance of marine life and how we, as humans, are active participants in the balance of it. Andre’s work highlights the nature of our symbiotic relationship with seagrass and the importance of preserving it. Shelly is an emerging performance artist, painter and printmaker focusing on the intimate connections between humans, life and the world around us.
