Doctor at Bedford VA center charged with possession of child sexual abuse material

A doctor at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bedford was arrested and charged with possession of child sexual assault material following an investigation by federal and local law enforcement.

Sven Knudsen Ljaamo, 70, of Billerica, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, according to the Massachusetts U.S. attorney's office.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children forwarded a tip from Google to investigators. The tip said more than 100 images of minors were uploaded to a Google account held by Ljaamo, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. That tip was forwarded to the Billerica Police Department.

Investigators used details about the account, including email addresses, IP addresses and phone numbers to connect it to Ljaamo, according to the complaint.

"When Ljaamo spoke to investigators, he allegedly admitted to viewing, downloading and saving pornographic material involving female minors," the U.S attorney's office said in a statement.

The girls depicted in the material may have been as young as 4 years old, according to the complaint filed by FBI Special Agent Brandon Roque.

Ljaamo was arraigned Wednesday and ordered held until his next court appearance on April 29.
