Music on Only A Game 10/3/09

Love a song you heard on this week’s show?  Each week Only A Game’s Senior Producer Gary Waleik selects the music you hear.  Here’s why:

Buckle Down with Nixon by Oscar Brand (from Presidential Campaign Songs 1789-1996, Smithsonian Folkways, 1999)

Gary’s take: They’re replacing the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis with Richard Nixon Fields, right? Right? No?

Punch Bowl by Alan Parker (from The Sound Gallery, Vol. 1, Scamp Records, 1995)

Gary’s take: Why not?

Drop That Puck! By the Zambonis (from More Songs About Hockey…and Buildings and Food, Tarquin Records, 1999)

Gary’s take:The hockey world needs more songs from these guys. MSAHABAF (which is what we Zamboniphiles call the band) released this, their Keith Magnuson opus, a full 10 years ago. Learn more about them here

The Gambler by Some Anonymous Guy not named Kenny Rogers (from Drew’s Famous Casino Party Music, Turn Up the Music, 2002)

Gary’s take:Kenny Rogers is bad enough (sorry, Larry Bird), but an anonymous studio singer covering “The Gambler”? We had to get that on the air.

Gato Montes by Don Vincente and His Orchestra (from Bullfighting Music from Spain, Premiere Music Company, 1998)

A tip of la Montera (that’s Spanish for “the Montera”) to Spain, which seemed pretty disappointed on Friday to lose its Olympic bid for the 2016 games. Actually, you can buy a Montera here

This program aired on October 2, 2009. The audio for this program is not available.
