Music on Only A Game 10/31/2009

Each week Only A Game's Senior Producer Gary Waleik chooses the week's musical selections.  Here's why:

Moon River by Audrey Hepburn (from Music from the Films of Audrey Hepburn, Big Screen Records, 1993)

Gary's Take: “Vince Lombardi….wiiiiiiider than the Nile…”

Jungle Symphony by The Ananda Shankar Experience and State of Bengal (from Walking On, Real World, 1999)

Gary's Take:  No truth to the rumor that the NFL will looking to place a franchise in Calcutta. If it does, Ananda Shankar, the nephew of the esteemed Ravi Shankar, will certainly have a job with NFL Films should he so desire.

Oyster by Jawbreaker (from Dear You, Geffen Records, 1995)

Gary's Take:  This beloved Cape Cod band writes songs exclusively about shellfish. Check out their chart-busting 1996 hit “Langoustine Fever”.  Just kidding.
Baubles, Bangles and Beads by Julie Andrews (from The Best of Julie Andrews, Rhino, 1996)

Gary's Take:  This visionary songstress apparently foresaw the coming of Susanna Hoffs and her bandmates.

Dances With Wolves (from Cinema Century, Silva Screen Records, 1996)

Gary's Take:  My Uncle John once told me that Kevin Costner “just oozes integrity”. To be fair to my favorite Unc, I’m positive this declaration preceded the release of “Waterworld” and “The Postman”.

That Baseball Rag by D’Anna Fortunato and The Triskelion All-Stars (from Hurrah for our National Game, Newport Classic, 1994)

Gary's Take:  Some wonderfully antiquated baseball music here. Unfortunately, this compilation suffers from horrible recordings and liner notes from some hack who doubles as a public radio sports show host.
