Music on Only A Game 12/19/09

musicnote1Love the music on this week's show? Hate it? Completely mystified by it?  Here's the inside scoop...

Fight Fiercely Harvard by Mixed Company (from A Capella Party: The Best of The Ivy League Singing Groups, Rhino, 1996)

Gary's Take: “I say, Buffy, would you mind passing the crudités?” It’s funny when young Ivy Leaguers try hard to sound cooler than old Ivy Leaguers. It just doesn’t work.
When the Saints Go Marchin’ In by Louis Armstrong (from Now You Has Jazz: Louis Armstrong at MGM, Rhino, 1997)

Gary's Take:If Satchmo were alive, wouldn’t it be the best thing ever if he played at the Super Bowl halftime show? And if it were in New Orleans? And Earl “Fatha” Hines did the opening coin toss? And Jack Teagarden was doing color commentary? And Duke Ellington was the NFL Commissioner?

Any Given Sunday Outro by Jamie Foxx (from Any Given Sunday: Music from the Motion Picture, Vol. II, Warner Sunset/Atlantic, 2000)

Gary's Take: I wonder if Bert Bell gets royalties?

Coventry Carol by Ed Sweeney (from A Dickens Christmas…Inside Fezziwig’s, Intersound, 1992)

Gary's Take: I once heard a guy in a liquor store buy a six pack of Sam Adams Old Fezziwig Ale and ask the cute, freckly-faced Irish girl behind the counter “What’s a Fezziwig?” She patiently explained it to him, completed the transaction and, when the dullard had vacated the premises, asked me if I could believe that he didn’t know who Mr. Fezziwig was. I fell in love on the instant. I still shop at that store, and that was at least 20 years ago.

Re-entry to Mog by 101 Strings (from Astro-Sounds from Beyond the Year 2000, Scamp, 1996)

Gary's Take: Wowwwwwwwww…
No Gelt, No Glory by Gods of Fire (from Hanukkah Gone Metal, Black Thirteen Recording Company, 2009)

Gary's Take:  No nebbishes they. Tune in next year for The Quest for the Latke Oil and/or Spin for the Blood of Our Elders. Seriously…these are titles of real songs.

This program aired on December 18, 2009. The audio for this program is not available.
