Last season, the Battle Creek Bombers completed their fifth season in the Northwoods League, a summer league for collegiate baseball players. But not everything was going right for the Bombers off the field.

“To be honest with you, our concession operation was probably our weak point last year,” said general manager Brian Colopy. “So we said, ‘Hey, what are we going to do make it special and do something different?’”

The solution? The Twinkie Dog.

“We just took a Twinkie, and said, ‘OK, we’re just going to replace the classic hot-dog bun with a Twinkie, slap a hot dog in there,’ and there you go: you have a new Bombers Twinkie Dog,” said Assistant General Manager Anthony Iovieno.

The Bombers have so much faith in their creation that they have been giving away free samples to those willing to stop by their office.

“We believe in the product,” Colopy said. “We’ve taste-tested it. We love it. And so we’re trying to turn the doubters into believers now, so we’re willing to take that bite to do it.”

But the Bombers may not be done pushing the boundaries of traditional ballpark food offerings.

“If a fan comes up with a great idea, we’re always willing to consider it,” Colopy said.

This segment aired on March 2, 2013.
