Music On Only A Game
Among the music selections evident in this week's program we find "Like A Prayer," by the Rondelles. I'm told it's available on the 1999 Teenbeat Sampler.
Whether "Rondelles" is a better name for a group than "Shondells," (with or without Tommy James) "Shirelles," "Chiffons," or "Londells" is a matter for discussion on some especially empty day. (I've never actually heard of the Londells. Perhaps they don't exist. But my guess is they're out there somewhere, still waiting for their big break.)
"Rich Girl" (from Baltimore) was performed by Nina Simone. Good choice by somebody. I wish I'd thought of it.
"San Quentin" comes to us courtesy of Johnny Cash, who was in San Quentin a couple of times, but only as a performer, which meant he could leave when the show was over. There was some pressure for going with a song by Big Dipper that includes mention of San Quentin, but the ghost of Johnny Cash threatened to haunt us if we didn't use his song after a story that was set there, and we caved.
