Those who urge a restoration of the social safety net are quick to point to growing disparity between rich and poor as an indication of the imbalance of the American system but Jacob Hacker, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yale University argues that a more important and troubling trend is the growing economic insecurity that American families live in.

"It's not where you are on the ladder that counts" says Jacob Hacker, "but how far you fall when you slip and what's there to catch you."
