Steve Coll, managing editor of the Washington Post, has constructed a detailed account of the events that led to the rise of Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. Throughout the Soviet war in Afghanistan and in the years preceding 9/11, the intelligence services of half a dozen countries were engaged in clandestine dance with the growing forces of Islamic fundamentalism in the region.
