Steve Coll, managing editor of the Washington Post, has constructed a detailed account of the events that led to the rise of Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. Throughout the Soviet war in Afghanistan and in the years preceding 9/11, the intelligence services of half a dozen countries were engaged in clandestine dance with the growing forces of Islamic fundamentalism in the region. Now, as the hunt for Osama bin Laden continues, a new book carefully chronicles the CIA attempts to control and eventually capture or kill the Al Qaeda leader.

Steve Coll, managing editor of the Washington Post and author of "Ghost Wars, The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, From the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001."
