The Ivory-billed Woodpecker

Rare sightings of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker were reported throughout the 20th century.

But these were largely dismissed by a scientific community that had deemed the bird extinct. A birder from the Cornell Lab of Ornathology and his wildlife photographer friend were some of the few that didn't lose hope and set out to prove the existence of the illusive, majestic bird.
