Public television lion and lightening rod Bill Moyers doesn't mince words when it comes to what he sees as a clear and present threat to American democracy. Democracy in this country has been a series of narrow escapes, he says.

And now, says Moyers, we may be running out of luck. Money, faction, and fear, he practically hollers, are within reach of pulling down the great American experiment.

Moyers loyalists — and they are legion — see him as a truth-telling hero. His critics — and their e-mails clog the PBS inbox — charge he's out of control.

This hour, On Point: a conversation with Bill Moyers.Guest:

Bill Moyers, host of "Bill Moyers Journal" on PBS and author of the new book "Moyers on Democracy."

This program aired on May 12, 2008.
