General Michael Flynn is out as national security adviser. We’re looking at how that happened and what now. Greg Miller, national security correspondent for the Washington Post, joined us today to dig in to the breaking news story. He has been covering Michael Flynn’s stunning resignation as national security adviser after just 24 days on the job.

"We've been writing about this for the better part of a year," Miller told host Tom Ashbrook today. "The Russia stuff really has been swirling for a while, and really started to come together in recent weeks." According to Miller's reporting, Flynn in fact did discuss sanctions with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

"I don't think there was a huge circle in the United States government who knew," Miller said. "Senior officials in the White House would have known, senior officials at the FBI, the CIA certainly would have known."

The evolving story centers around Flynn's misleading comments to the office of Vice President Mike Pence, who recently indicated the White House's support for Flynn on national television. It was not the first time the Vice President was mislead by Flynn, and reporting suggests the mischaracterizations helped lead to Flynn's resignation and dismissal.

You can link to more of Miller's reporting here, and tune in for a close look at national security in the Trump administration tomorrow, February 15.

This segment aired on February 14, 2017.
