Gov. Baker To Testify On Economic Development Plan

On Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Charlie Baker will testify on his five-year, economic development plan totaling more than $900 million for Massachusetts before a legislative committee at the State House.

The plan — which Baker outlined in January — calls for $500 million to be spent over five years on the MassWorks program, which helps communities with certain infrastructure needs. The governor has said that without additional funds, the program will run out of money by next year.

Other spending in the legislation includes $50 million for redevelopment projects in cities, $75 million for redeveloping contaminated sites, and $25 million to create moderately priced starter homes for families.

The governor told reporters on Monday that the capital funding package is a major priority for his administration.

"It's very important that we make some of these investments, because they can make a big difference in communities all over the commonwealth," Baker said.

Baker will present his pitch Tuesday before the Legislature's Economic and Emerging Technologies Committee at around 3 p.m.
