"Nobody would have blamed Susan if she had turned inward with grief, or with anger. But that isn't who she is."

President Obama praised Susan Retik for her resilience as he presented her with the Presidential Citizens Medal last week. The Needham 9/11 widow turned her personal tragedy into a goodwill effort aimed at her fellow widows in Afghanistan. Retik co-founded Beyond the 11th, a foundation that has raised more than $600,000 for literacy classes, job training and micro-loans to help Afghan widows advance their position in society.
