The story: an investigation into why a city-funded theater is scarcely used. The byline: a Pulitzer-winning journalist. The publication: a neighborhood weekly.

The story out about the Strand Theatre today in the Dorchester Reporter is the product of a new initiative at Northeastern University aimed at bringing investigative resources to the small, often over-stretched community newsrooms.

At at time when the large dailies have significantly scaled back their local coverage, is this the future of community journalism? Are there stories in your neighborhood or town that you think bear investigating?

Guests:

  • Bill Forry, editor, The Dorchester Reporter
  • Stephen Kurkjian, senior investigative fellow at Northeastern University and former Boston Globe reporter
  • Walter Robinson, journalism professor at Northeastern and former Globe Spotlight editor

This program aired on August 26, 2010.
