This weekend, an estimated 8,000 athletes will descend on Cambridge to race in the 46th annual Head of the Charles regatta. Among this year's rowers will be Henry Hamilton, who, at age 69, has participated in all but one of the races. The one year he missed the event, he was on an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Hamilton lives in Vermont but rows so frequently on the Charles that he keeps a part-time residence just a few blocks from the Cambridge Boat Club.

It was there we met with Hamilton to talk about his 45 years racing the event, starting with his memories from the first year.

Jason Breslow produced this story.

This program aired on October 22, 2010.
