Defending The Mass. Defense Industry

Massachusetts has done better than most states hard-hit by this recession, helped along by its strong educational, medical and financial sectors.

These industries have helped keep the state's unemployment numbers among the lowest in the country. But one industry that's helped fuel an increase in jobs here has not gotten much credit: the defense industry.

New figures released Monday show that federal defense spending in Massachusetts has tripled in the last decade and that the number of defense-related jobs in the state has increased by 70 percent.
