Just after the collapse of the twin towers, FEMA put out the call to its national network of volunteer search-and-rescue teams. Many of the responding teams brought search dogs.

Among the people caring for the search and rescue dogs was veterinary surgeon Lori Gordon of Atkinson, New Hampshire.
