The Elusive Search For An Alzheimer's Cure

All this week, WBUR has been reporting on Alzheimer's, the debilitating brain disease that afflicts more than 5 million Americans. It's not a happy story, particularly for the families coping with the disease. But while a treatment seems to be a ways off, there is promising medical research underway.

One leader in the field of Alzheimer's research is Dr. Reisa Sperling. She directs the Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Sperling told Radio Boston she's optimistic that a treatment to prevent or delay Alzheimer's may be found in a matter of years.

"We can't be decades away, because it's an epidemic waiting to happen," Sperling said.
