The Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl. That in itself isn't a shock, but what was shocking was how they secured their slot Sunday night.

With 15 seconds left on the clock, and Baltimore a mere three points down, Ravens kicker Billy
Cundiff attempted what looked like a run-of-the-mill 32-yard field goal that would have tied the game, as the sports announcer said:

And in all likelihood send it to overtime — 32 yards to tie it, and the kick, look out, look out, it's no good, it's no good!

The ball veered left, and the fans at Foxborough — and across the region — exploded with joy.

But NPR sports commentator Stefan Fatsis felt for poor Billy Cundiff. Fatsis trained as a place kicker and wrote about his experience at the Broncos training camp in the book "A Few Seconds of Panic."
