Resume

Every time diva Maria Callas sang the mesmerizing "Habanera" aria from the opera "Carmen," she owned it. Callas's voice was volcanic. Composer George Bizet was famously restless, so one must think he would have approved of the passionate excursions she takes throughout the aria.

Lovers of classical music. Lovers of club music, unite. I give you Acoustica Electronica!

"Habanera" meets house at Club Oberon in Cambridge tonight. And Acoustica Electronica isn't some ecstasy-fueled mindtrip conceived in a basement rave. Quite the opposite, in fact. It's the brainchild of Touch Performance Art, an entrepreneurial group that brings together musicians from New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory and classically trained DJs to reinvent and remix the most commanding of the classics.

Don't scoff. Maria Callas owned "Habanera" for her time, and Acoustica Electronica does, too.

The Oberon show mixes DJs, live classical musicians and professional dancers who at times take to the air above the audience. Marissa Rae Roberts and Colin Thurmond are co-founders of Touch Performance Art, and Acoustica Electronica's director.

Acoustica Electronica has another show tonight at Oberon in Cambridge at 9 p.m.

This segment aired on February 17, 2012.
