We've talked a lot on Radio Boston about how the high cost of living in Massachusetts makes it difficult for young people to live here.

Now, a new study finds the exact same thing is true for Bay State elderly as well. In fact, the elderly are struggling more in Massachusetts to make ends meet than anywhere else in the country.

That's according to a new study titled: "Doing Without: Economic Insecurity and Older Americans." In the study, researchers from the University of Massachusetts at Boston and the advocacy group Wider Opportunities for Women also found that compared to the rest of the nation, five other New England states had some of the largest gaps between elderly income and expenses.

Guest:

  • Jan Mutchler, professor of gerontology, University of Massachusetts at Boston.

This segment aired on March 1, 2012.
