A major national story is playing out in the halls of Beacon Hill: this week's Supreme Court hearings on the national Affordable Health Care Act. At issue there is the individual mandate that would require all Americans to purchase health insurance. That idea was first put into practice right here in Massachusetts.

Some lawmakers want the state to push health care reform to the next level. They've introduced a bill that would bring a "single-payer" system to the Bay State.

Given the pitched battle going on in the Supreme Court, you might think that the idea of making a single-payer system a reality anywhere in America is a laughable idea. And the bill's sponsor would be the first to agree with you that this legislation isn't going anywhere this year. But he also sees hope against hope when he looks just north of the Massachusetts border, because a single-payer does exist, in Vermont.
