R.I. Guardsman Who Saved Afghan Boy Laid To Rest
PlaySgt. Dennis Weichel Jr. was laid to rest Monday at Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter. The 29-year-old National Guardsman was killed in an accident last month in Afghanistan following the daring rescue of a young Afghan boy.
Friends and fellow soldiers praised the Providence native's heroism in a memorial service Monday morning at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.
"Dennis Weichel had the courage of a warrior, but ... what drove Dennis to save that child was the heart of a father,” Rhode Island National Guard commander Maj. Gen. Kevin McBride said.
Weichel has been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and NATO Service Medal Afghanistan Campaign Ribbon RI Star.
