Tarek Mehanna, the Sudbury native convicted late last year of attempting to aid al-Qaida, has been sentenced to 17.5 years in federal prison.

Mehanna was convicted on four terror-related charges and three counts of lying to authorities. Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of at least 25 years, but Mehanna's defense team argued that his crimes ultimately hurt no one.

WBUR's David Boeri has been following the case and was there at the courthouse Thursday when the sentence was handed down.
