38 Studios: Gambling On Innovation

The big data initiative announced Wednesday by MIT is a recent example of government support of innovation. In conjunction with MIT, Massachusetts officials announced that multiple state programs will support big data research in the state.

In Rhode Island, state officials took a bet on innovation and lost when Curt Schilling's video game company 38 Studios defaulted on a $75 million loan.

Scott Kirsner, The Boston Globe's innovation columnist, joins Radio Boston to talk about the difference between these two investments and whether the Schilling fiasco will have an effect on state tax credits for creative tech companies in the future.
