"It takes a village" to raise a child, they say. But in the 21st century, when 93 percent of moms have Internet access from any location, that "village" has become the vast sea of listservs and online groups that provide a platform for parental conversation and information sharing.

As a recent article in The Boston Globe Magazine explains, these groups have proven their marketing power, steering parents toward some products and far away from others. But they have also served as support systems, offering parents an instant way to reach out to others about everything from getting a child to sleep to last-minute babysitting assistance.
