Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino: A Musical Taste Of Italy

Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino is one of Italy's longest standing traditional music ensembles, hailing from the region of Salento — the heel of the boot of Italy. They originally formed in 1975, but today, most of its members are younger than the group itself. Together, they are breathing new life into the ancient ritual of "pizzica tarantata" — a frenzied dance believed to cure the bite of a poisonous spider.

The group's performances have been described as fiery, electrifying and passionate, and tonight, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino brings the tradition of "Pizzica" to Johnny D's in Somerville.
