Boston's Mango Blue Mixes Musical Genres

Alex Alvear is one of the mainstays of the Boston Latino music scene. He's a composer, a bassist, and the voice that leads the big boisterous band, Mango Blue.

Mango Blue will be playing at Regattabar in Cambridge on Friday, August 2. Alvear dropped by our studios to talk about his pan-American fusion group.

"I call it a big salad bowl where I throw a lot of musical styles that have been part of my upbringing," Alvear explained. "Afro-Cuban folklore and popular music, Puerto Rican, Dominican, a lot of Salsa, some funk and jazz. This brings everything together."
