If you have a minute or so, go to this YouTube link of John Mellencamp performing his 1994 cover version of Wild Night, the hugely popular 1971 Van Morrison song, and listen to the woman accompanying him.

She is Meshell Ndegeocello, a music industry veteran well-known for her collaborations and her covers. She's been making music for three decades, partnering with huge-name artists including Madonna, Herbie Hancock and Alanis Morissette. Now she has a new solo album titled "Comet, Come To Me" that features lush vocals, rich lyrics and her signature bass.

Ndegeocello will be performing at The Sinclair in Cambridge on Saturday, June 7, and she spoke earlier this week with WBUR's Sacha Pfeiffer.

The Boston Globe: Ndegeocello Explores What It Means To Be An American

  • "Meshell Ndegeocello has built her stature as one of our most important singer-songwriters almost by stealth. She is prolific, with 11 albums starting with her 1993 debut, “Plantation Lullabies.” But her disposition is to stay in the shadows, guarding her space from commercial demands and the invasions of celebrity culture."

Variety: Meshell Ndegeocello’s Versatility Should Not Go Uncelebrated

  • "Meshell Ndegeocello’s versatility might be considered a blessing and a curse. Unlike Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill — two peers with whom she shares a certain mystique and eccentricity — her artistry is diffuse, a trait with which certain critics have taken exception. But to her hardcore fans, her broad musical grasp is a thing to be celebrated."

This segment aired on June 6, 2014.
