A ceremonial changing of the guard took place on Beacon Hill Wednesday. After eight years as governor of the Commonwealth, Deval Patrick is completing his last full day in office. Thursday, Charlie Baker will be sworn in as the state's 72nd governor.

Wednesday, the two will meet privately in the governor's office. Then, in keeping with a 130-year-old tradition, Patrick will descend the Statehouse steps in the so-called "lone walk," symbolizing the governor rejoining the Commonwealth as a private citizen.
