We're officially in the dog days of summer. For some people, that means "long drives out of town, lunch stops, gift shops, road tolls, slow strolls and being open to serendipity."

That's according to The Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic, Sebastian Smee, who's been enjoying all of the above, with the mission of finding some of New England's best art exhibits.

The Boston Globe: ‘Whistler’s Mother’ And Fresh Perspectives At The Clark

  • "Summer visits to New England’s art museums are not just about whatever exhibitions the relevant institutions happen to be hosting. They’re about long drives out of town, lunch stops, gift shops, road tolls, slow strolls, and being open to serendipity."

The Boston Globe: Jim Shaw’s Subconscious Runs Amok At Mass MoCA

  • "So often, in their efforts to distill chaotic reality into a credible image, artists end up with merely a very pale and insubstantial version of it. Art is to life, in such cases, as those factory-produced Communion wafers are to the Christian concept of the life everlasting. You can make the connection, if you have a bit of imagination, and the will to faith. But it’s a bit tenuous."
