The coronavirus crisis continues to take its toll on the U.S. economy, which suffered its worst first quarter since the 2008 recession.

That strain is being felt here in Massachusetts, which has been in a recession since late last month. Just last week, a record total of almost a quarter-million people filed for unemployment. As many businesses remain closed across the Commonwealth, things could get worse.

We talk through the facts and figures with WBUR's Callum Borchers, and turn to former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift for her take on the role and responsibility of government in an economic crisis.

This segment aired on April 30, 2020.
