For the first time in its more than 120-year history, no one ran the Boston Marathon on Marathon Monday.

It's just not safe to combine 30,000 runners and a million spectators during a pandemic.

But, just because we didn't have the big race in April doesn't mean the marathon isn't happening at all. The first virtual Boston Marathon kicked off this weekend, as we hear from WBUR's Alex Ashlock.

This segment aired on September 8, 2020.
